The Credit Union Shows Its Pride with Support for Affirmations
The Credit Union is proud to continue its endeavors to provide financial education and support leadership opportunities for LGBTQ+ residents in Oakland County, and the surrounding communities, in partnership with Affirmations.
In 2019, the Credit Union began providing youth financial education as a part of the Affirmations Cross the Line (XTL) Youth Development Program, a program for LGBTQ+ individuals who wish to become leaders in their communities. Workshops focused on budgeting, investing basics, financial goal setting and building credit.
In 2020, the Desk Drawer Fund, a foundation supporting the MSUFCU and OU Credit Union communities, awarded Affirmations a $2,500 grant to support the continuation of the XTL program. Financial education will continue to be a core component of the program because it provides essential skills for financial independence and will help participants on their path to establishing themselves as leaders.
In addition to working with the XTL program, the Credit Union has collaborated with Affirmations to provide adult financial education on the topics of budgeting and identity theft prevention. These presentations were broadcast virtually via Zoom and Facebook Live in the LGBTQ+ communities that Affirmations supports.
“MSUFCU's support of the Youth Leadership and Development Program at Affirmations has been essential to its success, not only financially, but with the level of knowledge and education provided to the participants regarding financial well-being and success,” said Ian Unger, Program Manager at Affirmations. “Financial literacy is a topic that many of the youth in our program would not be able to receive without participating in the Youth Leadership and Development Program, and thanks to Ian Duncanson and the MSUFCU team, the youth are able to learn this information in an engaging, impactful way."

The Credit Union emphasizes the strong importance of diversity, equity and inclusion as a core value. This is reflected both internally and externally through employee resource groups (ERGs), employment policies, community involvement and outreach, and community financial support. The CU Pride ERG has grown to over 60 employees in 2020 and has given an outlet to employees in the LGBTQ+ community to suggest policy updates and resources that could benefit the Credit Union and the community. CU Pride also allows LGBTQ+ employees and allies to network and support common causes. During the month of June, employees raised funds to donate to provide Affirmations with surgical masks and other needed supplies.
