MSUFCU members and guests enjoyed an exceptional evening of jazz on Monday, April 7, as part of the Blue Mondays concert series through the MSU Federal Credit Union Jazz Artist in Residence Endowment. The high-energy performance featured jazz drummer, Jeff Hamilton and MSU College of Music Professors of Jazz. The internationally acclaimed artist is the third guest artist to be featured in the Blue Mondays concert series.

The MSU College of Music welcomed Hamilton to Michigan April 7-12, 2014. Hamilton put his talents to work as an experienced jazz teacher, arranger, and composer by holding master classes where he worked with MSU jazz students, and joined high school and middle school jazz students across Michigan to enrich local music programs and provide educational experiences for young musicians.

“I’ve known Jeff for many years, and he has a great rapport with students as well as with audiences,” said Rodney Whitaker, director of MSU Jazz studies. “He is one of the most talented drummers in the world, and his residency is an exciting way to wrap up our first year of the MSUFCU jazz artists in residence.”

Members also have a chance to see Hamilton perform with Jazz Orchestra I, MSU’s premier student jazz ensemble, at Fairchild Theatre in MSU’s Auditorium on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at 8:00 p.m. for the Jazz Spectacular wrap-up concert. Jazz Spectacular concert will feature, a swing dance at 8:00 p.m., on Friday, April 11, and the regional Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition all day on Saturday, April 12, at the MSU Union Main Lounge. You may purchase your tickets on the MSU College of Music website.
