International Credit Union Day

October 17, 2024

Today, MSUFCU proudly joins credit unions worldwide in celebrating International Credit Union Day. This year's theme, One World Through Cooperative Finance, highlights the vital role credit unions play in uniting communities through financial empowerment and shared values.

What is International Credit Union Day?

The third Thursday of October has been recognized as International Credit Union Day since 1948, and MSUFCU is proud to be a part of this global movement. Unlike traditional financial institutions, credit unions operate as not-for-profit organizations, meaning their primary goal is to serve their members. This structure allows credit unions to provide an alternative to for-profit banks, offering lower fees, better loan rates, and personalized financial services.

What makes MSUFCU and other Credit Unions Unique?

Credit unions, like MSUFCU, share core values that set them apart from other financial institutions. In honor of International Credit Union Day, here’s a look at what makes credit unions stand out:

  • Equal Ownership: As a member of a credit union, you’re more than just a customer—you’re an owner. Each member has equal ownership and one vote, regardless of their account balance.

  • Not-for-Profit: Credit unions operate as not-for-profit financial cooperatives, providing a safe and convenient place to save money, access loans, and enjoy other financial services.

  • People Helping People: The core mission of credit unions is to serve their members, not make a profit. This “people-first” approach fosters community engagement. At MSUFCU, we take pride in giving back through organizations like the MSUFCU Desk Drawer Foundation and other community initiatives.

  • Volunteer Leadership: Credit unions are led by a volunteer board of directors, elected from within their membership, ensuring decisions are made in the best interests of the members.

  • Financial Education: MSUFCU and other credit unions are dedicated to offering free financial education to both members and the public. Many also extend these services to classrooms, helping students prepare for college and beyond.

  • Trustworthy and Resilient: Credit unions are known for their reliability and stability. Members can feel confident that their funds are secure, regardless of fluctuations in the financial landscape.
